Salvation
“And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or
by what name, have ye done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said
unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be
examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made
whole; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the
name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the
dead, even by him doth this man stand here
before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders,
which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any
other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we
must be saved.”
(Acts 4:7-12)
Today’s
Morsel: If someone were to ask you what it takes for
them to be saved, what would you tell them. You know, every church will
tell you what they think it means for you to be saved. And they usually all say
something different. So, who is right? Let's turn to the
Bible and see what it says. Scripture states that Jesus said, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the
kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy
name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful
works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye
that work iniquity.”(Matthew 7:21-23) And
Paul states, “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have
always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence,
work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” (Philippians 2:12) In Acts 16:29-33, the Jailor asked Paul
and Silas, “Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came
trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said,
Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus
Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word
of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour
of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all
his, straightway.” Peter
says, “By which also he went and preached unto the spirits
in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God
waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that
is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even
baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh,
but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus
Christ”
(1 Peter 3:19-21) And Luke records
Peter as telling the religious leaders that salvation is only in the name of
Jesus Christ. So that is what the Bible says about how we must be saved.
Have you taken on His name in the waters of Baptism? It is the Bible way
for salvation.
Sing: I know I'm
saved and I’m so glad about it, I found the joy my spirit craved. It is
so real that I could never doubt it. O’ praise the Lord I know am saved!
Thought For Today: “Then Peter said
unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For
the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off,
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” (Acts 2:38-39)
Peter did not know it, but "all those that are far off" wasn't just distance but time as well. He was talking about us.
ReplyDeleteGood point. I always thought about it referring to us. Could mean far off spiritually speaking as well...
