When We Don't Understand
“And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten
to take bread. Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of
the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. And they reasoned among themselves, saying,
It is because we have taken no bread. Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto
them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have
brought no bread? Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of
the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Neither the seven loaves of
the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? How is it that ye do not
understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware
of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Then understood they how
that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the
Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” (Matthew 16:5-12)
Today’s Morsel: When we read scripture, we must make sure that we
get an understanding of what is being spoken and of what is written, or we can
become confused and go the wrong way. The disciples thought that they
knew what Jesus was talking about. But when Jesus explained to them that
He wasn’t talking about bread, then they understood that He was talking about
doctrine. One of the first principles of learning is to understand. “Happy is the man that
findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.” (Proverbs 3:13) If you do not understand how the gospel
is applied to your life, you can think that you are saved and be way of
course. When Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be born again (John 3:3),
Nicodemus was confused stating, “How can a man
be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb,
and be born?”
(John 3:4) He wanted an
understanding. There is nothing wrong with asking if you don’t
know. As Solomon said, "Happy is the man that getteth
understanding." A good
understanding of things natural and civil gives favor among men, and so a good
understanding of divine and spiritual things gives a man favor among people. Why live in
the fog and darkness when you can walk in the light of and with
understanding? Search the scriptures and gain understanding.
Sing: Who is this who loves a sinner as a
father loves his own, grieving over those who spurn his gentle plea.
Always ready to forgive them and to make forgiveness known, who is this forever
calling you and me?
It is Jesus, Jesus, sad one’s weep no more. He will
heal the brokenhearted open wide the prison door; He is able to deliver
evermore.
Thought For Today: “Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is
hard.”
(Proverbs 13:15)
