Self-Control
“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith
virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance
patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and
to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they
make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our
Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see
afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore
the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure:
for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be
ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ.”
(2 Peter 1:5-11)
Today’s Morsel:
Having control over oneself is key to eternal salvation. As a matter of
fact, Solomon states, “He
that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a
city that is broken down, and without
walls.” (Proverbs
25:28) Our ability to control ourselves comes from the Holy
Ghost. Temperance is part of the fruit of the spirit. If one cannot
control himself, he will self-destruct. Peter states that we must add
temperance to our knowledge. Knowledge can be like a wild horse if we do not
have the reins of self-control to direct it. Again, Solomon states, “When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge
is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall
keep thee” (Proverbs
2:10-11) If you desire to stay out of trouble, out of debt, and
not cause hardship to yourself, you must have temperance in your life.
Sing: They
that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with
wings as eagles; they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not
faint, teach me, Lord, teach me Lord to wait.
Thought For Today: Temperance
