Which Way Is Your Tent Pitched?
“And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.” (Genesis 13:8-13)
Today’s Morsel: One of the saddest
stories in the Bible to me is the story of Lot. Lot was never supposed to have
been with Abraham and Sarah from the start, as God had told Abraham to get out
of his country, and from his kindred, and from his father's house (Genesis
13:1). But for some reason Abraham took Lot with him. Lot's story shows
us the things that can happen when you choose wrong and when we set our tent in
the wrong direction. Scriptures say that Lot lifted-up his eyes and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well
watered everywhere, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even
as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
Then Lot chose him all the plains of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and
they separated themselves one from another, and Lot dwelled in the cities of
the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. Notice, he pitched
his tent toward the wicked and sinners. Sodom. And it isn’t long before we see
that Lot is no longer in the well-watered plains, but he now lives in Sodom
with wickedness and sinners. And in the end, he loses everything; His wife, his
sons, and while in a drunken state, he commits incest with his own daughters.
Which way is your tent pitched? If we are not careful, we, too, can find
ourselves living in this world with wickedness and sinners if we don’t pitch
our tent in the right direction. It does matter what surrounds
us.
Sing: This world is not my home, I'm just
a-passing through; my treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue.
The angels are beckoning me from heaven's open door, and I can’t feel at home
in this world anymore.
Thought For Today: Always ask Jesus
where He wants you to pitch your tent.
