Don’t Build Your Altar Too Late
“And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.” (1 Samuel 14:35)
Today’s Morsel: Throughout scripture we see the importance of altars. One of the first items the children of Israel encountered when they came to worship in the wilderness, was the brazen altar. It was a place of death. Altars were designed to keep one humble and abased. They were a place for seeking God and for keeping one’s relationship with Him intact. Altars were for sacrificing to God. Altars were not for seeking God in time of trouble, they were for seeking God before trouble. Scripture says that Saul was troubled and feared the Philistines, and that he had even commanded that no one eat anything which caused his soldiers to be fearful. Not only did they fear the Philistines, but they feared the order given by the king, as they knew that Saul would kill them. But Jonathan did not hear the order. Jonathan took matters into his hands to attack the Philistines with God’s help. And now, Saul hears noise of fighting and decides to build an altar to seek God. Scripture says that it was the first altar that he built unto the Lord. Now that he is fearful and uncertain, he decides to build and altar. I believe that if he had built an altar when he was first elected to be king, he would not have been rebellious, fearful, scared of his enemies, and rejected by God. We must build your altar now, early before things happen in our lives. As Isaiah said, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:6-7) We must seek Him daily, at our altar, so that we can keep your relationship with God strong and firm. So, that when we feel that our enemies are greater than we, we can just take it to the Lord in prayer and watch God work on our behalf.
Sing: Lord, I can’t even walk without You holding my hand, the mountains to high and the valleys to wide. Down on my knees, that’s where I’ve learned to stand. And I can’t even walk without You holding my hand.
Thought For Today: Don’t build your altar too late.
