Turning Darkness into Light

“Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79)

Today’s Morsel: One of the greatest mysteries open to us in scripture is God bringing light out of darkness. But when we read and understand that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all, the mystery is easily solved. Wherever Jesus went when He was upon the earth, it brought light. Whether He was teaching and opening peoples’ understanding, opening the eyes of the blind where they could now see, causing the lame to walk, or raising one from the dead, people saw great light. And now Jesus tells us to let our light shine so that men will see our good work and glorify our Father in heaven. Your actions and conduct should reveal to this world that Jesus is in you, the hope of glory. The world around you is looking for hope, healing, and understanding. Now is not the time to be like Eli, and let the lamp go out in the temple. Now is the time to seek for fresh oil and turn the wick up in the lamps high so that the light in the lighthouse will give way to the wayward and lost and bring those souls sailing at sea safely home into port.

Sing: This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine; this little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine; this little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine; let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Stop Making Everything About You

“The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.” (Proverbs 14:14)

Today’s Morsel: Some folks think that everything ought to be about them. They want the front-row seat. They want to be seated on the platform. They want to travel in first class. They don’t like waiting in line for a meal or for an appointment. It’s all about them and no one else. And some of these folks, when they are brought down to reality, go into depression and sickness. Life isn’t always about you. Life is about Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Solomon states that a good man is satisfied from himself. In other words, he’s figured out that it’s better to take the low road of humility than the high road of pride. The Psalmist said: “But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped...“Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction. How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.” (Psalms 73:2, 17-20) God has no problem with pulling the rug out from under your feet in front of others. Ask me how I know. Humble pie doesn’t really taste that good. You never want to be like the rich man in hell, who realizes that he now needs Lazarus, but there is no way he can get to him. Stay humble. Life is always better and more beautiful when you are led by the Spirit and not the flesh.

Sing: I’ve got Jesus on the inside working on the outside, oh what a change in my life. I’ve got Jesus on the inside working on the outside, oh what a change in my life. I’ve got Jesus on the inside working on the outside, oh what a change in my life, oh, what a change, in my life.

God Knows What is In Your Heart

“Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?” (Proverbs 15:11)

Today’s Morsel: I’m sure you’ve heard the story about the lad that went to the doctor and the doctor told him that he needed to listen to his heart. The lad said, that’s fine, but Jesus is in there. The doctor was stunned and said, What do you mean? The lad said, I have Jesus in my heart because He said that He would take up residence in me.  If you could see what was in your heart would you be surprised? Well, there is a way that you can see inside your heart. James tells us that God’s word is like a mirror, and it reveals to us who we are and what we should do. Jesus said that our heavenly Father even knows the number of hairs on our head. Nothing is hidden from God. David understood that God knew all things and so he prayed: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalms 139:23-24). He also prayed: “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom... Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalms 51:6, 10) In every prayer, we should seek God for cleansing of our heart, because our heart can is deceptive and desperately wicked.

Sing: Cleanse my heart O’ God, make it ever true, cleanse my heart O’ God may I be like You.

The Right Clothing

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10-11)

Today’s Morsel: My wife always tells me that the Norwegians have a saying that there is no bad weather, just bad clothing. I saw a young lady one day during the winter here in Wisconsin enter the store and she said that it was so cold out. As I observed her attire, her jeans were almost nothing but rags, and she didn’t have on a coat. I wasn’t critical of her as I know that that is the style for many young folks today.  But somewhere wisdom and understanding must come into play when you are freezing and cold. Paul tells us to put on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the tricks and schemes of the devil. Peter tells us to be clothed with humility. We are told “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” (Romans 13:14). And as priest of God, we are told to be clothed with righteousness and salvation. There are garments for war, and there are garments for peace. But of all the garments that we are commanded to wear, we are admonished by Paul “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” (Colossians 3:14) Do you have on the right clothing for the spiritual season you are in?

Sing: Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, lift-up your voice to God; pray in the Spirit and with understanding, oh magnify the Lord.

The Best Moral Compass

“My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:” (Proverbs 6:20-23)

Today’s Morsel: If you were to ask most young people today to navigate their way from point A to point B, using a Lensatic Compass, most of them would probably get lost. But when I was in the army, almost all our navigation was done through this handheld device. No matter if we were in the jungles of Vietnam, Germany, the snow-covered mountains in Alaska, in the desert, or on other bases in America, that was our navigational device.  Times have changed and now we use electronic GPS systems to navigate to find our way.  The best compass for navigating your life is the word of God. It will keep you on true north every time, and you don’t have to worry about veering off course. With the lensatic compass, if you veer of course one-degrees, at one-hundred meters it causes you to be ten-meters off-course when you reach your destination. So, one-degree off course at a thousand meters, would place you one-hundred meters off course. A GPS system is much more surer than the system we used to use.  But the Word of God has remained the only sure navigational system for our lives.  We can’t use anything else to help us navigate through life. We need the word of God. “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:” If you don’t want to get lost and miss heaven, keep following the word of God. It will get you to the right destination every time.

Sing: There’s a highway to heaven, none can walk up there, but the pure in heart. Oh, there’s a highway to heaven, walking up the King's highway.

The Keys to Living

“Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.” (Proverbs 7:2)

Today’s Morsel: Would you say that you are living or just existing? Some folks live their entire life trying to earn enough money to be able to retire and enjoy life. But I hate to tell them, the system is rigged. Most folks by the time they reach 65 or 70 to where they can retire, they are so worn that they don’t have the strength or energy to even enjoy retirement.  I don’t want to discourage you, but life isn’t always about a paycheck and money. Money is for existing; life is about Christ. Jesus said: “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10). You can’t keep saying that you are a Christian and then keep letting Satan keep making you a slave. Solomon says, “There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.” (Ecclesiastes 2:24) Let me share with you some keys to living:

  1. Love God and His Word: “If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.” (1 Corinthians 16:22)
  2. Keep your eyes on the prize: “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:8)
  3. Keep yourself in the Love of God: “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” (Jude 1:20-21)
  4. Don’t conform to this world and its ways: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
  5. Rejoice in the Lord always: “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4-7)

It will be the living according to Isaiah that will praise him: “The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.” (Isaiah 38:19) Are you living or just existing?

Sing: I’m going to praise the Lord anyway that I can. I’m going to praise the Lord anyway that I can. I’m gonna praise Him in the morning, praise Him all day long, I’m going to praise the Lord anyway that I can.

Consider Your Words

“In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.” (Proverbs 10:19)

Today’s Morsel: When I was in the army, I had a friend who would always say, “If you talk too much you will make grown folks hate you.” Solomon states that if you don’t talk too much, it can help you avoid sinning. Usually, folks who talk without considering what they say or are saying, do not consider that it can come back and cause them trouble. I’ve been listening to some of the political debates for folks being selected for political positions, and many of those being considered whose words were spoken years ago, are now coming back to haunt them. You must choose your words carefully. As Solomon says: “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” (Proverbs 17:28). Let me encourage you. Let your words be few, and those that are chosen by you should most often be used for the edifying of others and not glorifying yourself.

Sing: Say the name of Jesus, say the name, so precious; no other name I know, that can calm your fears, dry your tears, and wipe away your pain When you don’t know what else to pray, and you can’t find the words to say, just say the name.

Do You Have The Answer?

“Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips. That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?” (Proverbs 22:17-21)

Today’s Morsel: One of the things that I learned as a pastor is that when it comes to religious things, people expect you to have the answer to their questions. But sorry to say, sometimes I do not have their answer readily available, and I must tell them, sorry, I don’t know at this very moment, but I will get back to you.  It would be nice to have all the answers, but there are some questions that do require some research. Solomon, tells us: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:7) I’ve come to realize that all of life’s answers are in the Word of God. There is nothing hidden from Him that he hasn’t already given an answer. We just need to research His word and find it. For example, before Columbus sailed in search of a new world, there, were many who thought that the earth was flat and that they would fall off. But if they had read the book of Isaiah, they would have seen that the earth was round. “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth...” (Isaiah 40:22). Often in scripture when they would ask Jesus a question, He would say, “Have you not read?” This lets us know that the answers to our questions are there, but research is required.  When someone asks me who was God talking to when He said let us make man in our image, I tell them wisdom. Scripture says: “The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.” (Proverbs 8:22-36) It’s not good that the soul is without knowledge.

Sing: At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away, rolled away; it was there by faith, I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day.

The Anchor of Hope

“Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” (Hebrews 6:17-20)

Today’s Morsel: An anchor is a heavy object attached to a rope or chain and used to moor a vessel. Throughout life, there are going to be those times that the currents and waves of life are going try to drive us. There are going to be those times that you feel as though your ship is trying to sink. Therefore, we need to identify something that is steadfast and immovable now for us to attach ourselves to. The writer of Hebrews tells us that God’s Word and promises are an anchor for the soul, both sure and steadfast. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” (Matthew 24:35) This anchor will hold despite the storm. When you feel as though you have nothing else that you can anchor to, just anchor to Jesus, and stand on His Word.

Sing: When you've done all that you can, Stand on His Word. When you've stood all you can stand, do what you've learned. Remember all you've read is true, God said He'll always bring you thru, in spite of everything you've heard, Stand on His word.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 20 June 2023

The Most Important Thing

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.” (1 Timothy 2:1-10)

Today’s Morsel: When we become Christians, there must also be a change in our lifestyle. Throughout the New Testament writings, you will notice that the letters call for a change in mind, change in actions and conduct, and a change in our way of living.  Paul informed Timothy of what he saw was the most important thing in the church, which was prayer: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”  And then he says: “I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works” Men and women must pray always for all men and women, and those who are in authority. But then Paul shifts the focus to another important thing and that is of modesty in apparel. In the church, we must all be modest in our dress and appearance. We must not portray the world and its ways. Anything fake must be done away with. Fake nails, fake hair, fake attitudes, fake faces, fake love, and anything else that is fake must be done away with. You must be the real deal.  And then he says that women must be with shamefacedness and sobriety.  This is a great compliment to all women. What Paul is saying here is this, that women ought the have great honor and respect for themselves, along with self-control and a sound mind. Ladies, please listen to him. You are a daughter who represents the Most High God. Respect and honor for yourself is so important in the world in which we live. And since Paul is speaking to the church, I will say that men ought to have the same thing in their life. I am a believer that what is good for the gander is also good for the goose.  It is time for the church to reread the Word and get back to the basics of the most important things.  Holiness.

Sing: To be like Jesus! To be like Jesus! On earth I long to be like Him. All through life’s journey, from earth to glory, I only ask to be like Him.

Have You Received the Holy Ghost Since You Have Believed?

“And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.” (Acts 19:1-6)

Today’s Morsel: One of the most important things that you can have in your life is the gift of the Holy Ghost. Why is that? Well, Jesus said: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you... But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:16-18, 26) The apostle Paul tells us: “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” (Romans 8:9) So, we can easily see that if we do not have God’s Spirit in us, we are none of His. So, I ask the simple question again, have you received the Holy Ghost since you have believed? “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4)   Don’t allow someone to tell you that speaking in tongues is of the devil. That’s blasphemy. Speaking in tongues is your initial, undisputable evidence that God has put His Spirit in you.  Luke proves this to be true when he wrote: “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.” (Acts 10:44-48) Don’t take my word for it, read your Bible.  And then ask Jesus to give you the most precious gift you will ever receive.

Sing: I’ve got the Holy Ghost, down in my soul, just like the Bible said. I’ve got the Holy Ghost, down in my soul, just like the Bible said. Well, I’ve been to the water and I’ve been baptized in Jesus name, my soul got happy and I’m so satisfied. I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now, just like the Bible, just like the Bible, just like the Bible said.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 17 June 2023

Beware Of Gradualism

“And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.” (Judges 14:7)

Today’s Morsel: When we think of gradualism, we think of something that changes gradually instead of rapidly.  That’s why a person who has had a relationship with God and has tasted the sweet word and ways of God, doesn’t just up and quit serving Him. It is a gradual process. They usually, stop praying. Reading their Bible. Giving into the kingdom. And then it is missing church here and there. It’s the little changes that you can see in their life leading up to them backsliding and walking away from God. If you will notice the life of Samson, his parents were told by the angel: “Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.” (Judges 13:4-5). Notice what God said that the vows of a Nazarite must be:  “Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD: He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried. All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk. All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow. All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body. He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head. All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD.” (Numbers 6:2-8) As a Nazarite, Samson probably should have never had been involved with such a woman. The Philistines were his enemy.  His conversation with this woman began his gradual decline from what God had chosen him to be, know, and do; and it cost him his eyes and later his death. You may think that you have the power and can handle some of the places that you may go or the things that you may choose to do, but it is the little foxes that spoil the vine. The things of God must become a habit in your life, or you will soon start to compromise on truth.  Stay close to God and hold fast to His way.  Beware of gradualism in your life.

Sing: Standing on the Rock of Ages, safe from all the storms that rages, rich but not of Satan’s wages, I’m standing on the Solid Rock.

Wounded

“The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?” (Proverbs 18:14)

Today’s Morsel: There are many people walking around today that have been wounded. If you ever see a military person with a purple heart, you know that they were wounded in/during combat by the enemy.  But there are also those folks today in and out of the church that have been wounded, physically, mentally, and spiritually by friends and foes alike. Solomon states that “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?”  In other words, when your inward man, the soul, is healthy and in good health, it can sustain you through pain, suffering, and other trials and troubles. But when your inner man is wounded, what will you do? Satan isn’t too much concerned with your outer man, and sometimes I think we give him too much credit for the things that happen to us is the flesh. He’s more concerned with wounding you within. In your soul. That’s why he doesn’t try to destroy the church from without. He does it from within. Let me encourage you today. If you have been wounded within, there is a cure for you. “For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.” (Jeremiah 30:17) Why not look yourself in the mirror and say, “God’s got this!”

Sing: He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, surely, He bore all our sorrows, and by His stripes we are healed.

How Did the Gold Become Dim?

“How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.” (Lamentations 4:1)

Today’s Morsel: The Golden State is the nickname for the state of California.  Even though the nickname was given in the 20th century, it was named that by some during the 19th century of the California Gold Rush. Gold is a precious metal that is very expensive. When God instructed Moses to oversee the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness, many of the items were to be overlayed with and made from gold. David says: “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” (Psalms 19:7-10) The word of God is even more important than gold, he says. The apostle Peter also informs us that our faith is more precious than gold: “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” (1 Peter 1:7) But the question is asked, “How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed!” ? In other words, how did the tabernacle become of no value? How did the place where God’s Spirit dwelt lose its beauty or splendor? Paul asked: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) You, as the temple of God, are seen as being as precious gold. But allowing the world and its ways into your life, will cause you to change from what God made you to be, to become something that is useless and without value.

Sing: He is fairer than the lily of the valley, He is brighter than the morning star, He is purer than the snow, fresher than the breeze, lovelier than all of these.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 14 June 2023

Flag Day

“Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.” (Psalms 60:4)

Today’s Morsel: Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways, displaying the flag in the front of their homes, parades, and other patriotic observances. Today also marks the Birthday of the US Army. The U.S. Army is 245 years old and counting. That’s a LOT of birthday candles! The annual celebration marks the date in history in 1775 when the Continental Army was formed by the Second Continental Congress and commanded under General George Washington to fight against Britain. The Psalmist states: “Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth.”  Are you lifting up your flag of truth?

Sing: Joy is the flag that’s flown from the castle of my heart, from the castle of my heart, from the castle of my heart.  Joy is the flag that’s flown from the castle of my heart when the King is in residence there. So, lift it high in the sky that the whole world knows, that the whole world knows, that the whole world knows; So, lift it high in the sky that the whole world knows, that the King is in residence there.

Happy Birthday my fellow soldiers. Hooah!

Overcoming Loneliness

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” (Psalms 42:1-11)

Today’s Morsel: Loneliness is an unpleasant emotional response to perceived isolation. Feeling lonely can create depression, fear, and even suicidal thoughts. With over 350 billion people in the world, you would not think that loneliness would be a problem or something that we would need to be concerned about. But reports show that many people, from the youngest to the oldest, suffer from loneliness. There are those who live in the same house that suffer from loneliness. There are those who have children and grandchildren and still suffer from loneliness. There are those who have great coworkers around them, and yet they still suffer from loneliness. Is it a mental health issue or is something else going on within? Reading Psalms 42, not only does the psalmist reveal a state of depression, but also that of loneliness. He states, “For I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me?”  When we are separated from the ones that we love, when our friends turn their back on us, or we receive an evil doctor’s report and feel no one is there for us, we can start to feel lonely. But is there a cure for loneliness? The answer is yes. The writer of Hebrews tells us: “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15-16) The apostle Paul enlightens us with these words: “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:4-8) If you really want to conquer loneliness, purpose in your life to encourage and inspire others, and it will turn your mourning into dancing and your sorrow into joy.

Sing: I get joy when I think about, what He’s done for me, I get joy when I think about, what He’s done for me, I get joy when I think about, what He’s done for me, I get joy, joy, joy.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 12 June 2023

How Are We Saved?

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” (Ephesians 2:8)

Today’s Morsel: This question of salvation has plagued the minds of many. And even today, some are not sure if they are saved or not. Some even question their faith, while others question if all this is even real. But Paul stated: “For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.” (Romans 3:3-4) Just what is grace? According to the Touch Bible, “grace is the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life, including gratitude, acceptable, benefit, favor. Gift. The merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues.” So, we can see that grace only show forth God’s love and kindness. God’s grace, love and kindness ought to draw us to Him, but that does not save us.  According to the gospel of Saint Mark, chapter 16:15-16, Jesus instructs His disciples: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” (Mark 16:15-16). If we will notice, faith and baptism are requirements by Jesus to be saved. Don’t become confused with just thinking that you are saved by grace alone, nor just confessing Him with your mouth. In Romans 10, Paul isn’t saying that you are saved with just confessing with your mouth, he’s stating that for the Israelites to be saved, they had to confess Jesus with their mouth as most of the Jews rejected Jesus as being the Messiah. Go back and read Romans 10 very carefully. Make sure you start with verse 1. As stated, grace is just God’s unmerited love towards all of us. But to be saved, we must be baptized in His name and have His Spirit in our lives. As Jesus told Nicodemus: “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)

Sing: Oh yes, I’m saved and I’m happy today, thanks be to God, for this I can say; that I’m saved and I’m happy today, I’m walking up the King’s highway.

Convictions

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1)

Today’s Morsel: I have come to realize that there are basically three types of convictions. A Biblical conviction, which comes from the word of God. A church conviction, which a pastor may establish for the church they pastor. And then a Personal conviction, which a person holds true for themselves. But what I have come also to realize is that some folk’s personal conviction is not a true conviction, but they’re really just a personal preference. You see, a true conviction is something that you will hold on to and not give up nor let it go no matter what. It is something that you are willing to die for. So, if you can be easily persuaded to change your mind, or if you are not willing to die for it, then it's just a preference.  Luke shows us what a true personal conviction looks like through the life of the apostle Paul: “And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.” (Acts 21:10-14) It wasn’t a preference, for Paul, it was true conviction. A way of life. As Christians, we must know the difference or others may think that we are hypocrites.

Sing:  Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know; fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go. There’s within my heart a melody, Jesus whispers sweet and low, fear not, I am with thee, peace, be still, in all of life’s ebb and flow. Oh yes, it’s Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know, fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 9 June 2023

Let’s Go on Unto Perfection

“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit.” (Hebrews 6:1-3)

Today’s Morsel: Are you 100% satisfied and happy with where you are in your life and walk with Christ? If not, how much time do you spend preparing yourself and taking the steps in making you complete in Him? Sometimes, when I hear folks say that no one is perfect, and they don’t explain it to people, it lets me know that they are not doing anything to get there. I read a book once that said that if you dedicated one hour a day to something that you wanted to do or become, that in five years you would be a professional at it. Perfection must be obtainable by us because Jesus tells us to be perfect even as our Father in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48). You may say, but it is impossible. Jesus said that all things are possible to him that can believe. Jesus also said: “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:13-15) Jesus doesn’t ask us to do or to become something that He Himself has not already given us an example of how to do. Again, scripture tells us: “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:21-24) Christ has already modeled these things for us. We can either strive to reach perfection now or miss heaven later. Let me encourage you. The more you obey and do what God’s word says, the quicker you will reach the perfection He is asking of us to become.

Sing: I’ve got Jesus on the inside working on the outside, oh what a change in my life. I’ve got Jesus on the inside working on the outside, oh what a change in my life. I’ve got Jesus on the inside working on the outside, oh what a change in my life, oh what a change in my life.

A Better Country

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:13-16)

Today’s Morsel: As I listen to the news speaking of the immigration problem on the southern border, I’m reminded of the writer of Hebrews when he said that the patriarchs considered themselves as stranger and pilgrims on the earth seeking for a better country. What about you? Are you putting your roots down here, or are you seeking for a better country, a heavenly one, where God is not ashamed to be called your God? Paul tells us: “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:1-3) If we don’t seek it, we sure aren’t going to find it. I think that if you would be honest with yourself, you became a Christian so that you could go to heaven and be with Jesus forever. Am I correct? If your answer is yes, then you must keep looking for that city whose builder and maker is God.

Sing: There’s a country far beyond the starry skies, there’s a city where there never comes a night; if we are faithful, we shall go there by and by; Tis the city where the Lamb is the Light. In the city where the Lamb is the Light, in the city where there cometh no more night. I’ve a mansion over there and when free from toil and care, I am going where the Lamb is the Light.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 7 June 2023

Stuck In the Past, Blocked from the Future

“Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.” (John 9:26-30)

Today’s Morsel: Paul warns us that we should beware of the tradition of men and not after Christ. Some churches are continuing to hold onto the tradition of men. Many of them are still segregated, while others are seeking men to forgive them of their sins, and others are still treating Jesus as the son of God instead of treating Him as the God whom He is. They are stuck in the past which is blocking them from the future. You can’t move forth when you live in the past. Paul told the church at Rome:“Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.” (Romans 10:1-5) Notice, he said that Israel had a zeal for God but not according to knowledge. Then he said that Jesus is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes. Jesus Christ fulfilled the ceremonial law. When the veil of the temple was rent at the death of Jesus, it gave everyone free access to Him. No man can forgive you of your sin. John says: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin... If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:7, 9) You can repent of your sins yourself. James tells us: “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.” (James 2:8-9) God is no respecter of persons. If you or your church is not reaching out to every race, creed, color, when those races and people are around you, you are stuck in the past and blocking yourself and others for what God may have for you and them in the future. Let go of those traditions of men that go against God’s word and do what Christ is asking you to do, so you can enjoy the future.

Sing: He’s changing me, my blessed Savior, I’m not the same person that I use to be. Well, it’s been slow going, but there’s a knowing that someday, perfect I shall be.

The Day That Changed History

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4)

Today’s Morsel: On June 6, 1944, Allied Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy France to liberate Western Europe from Nazi Germany control. Code name ‘Overload’, due to the massive forces, the invasion became known as D-Day. The day the order was given for the invasion. For many days in the southern states, blacks were required to give up their seats and move to the back of the bus when a white person entered the bus and needed a seat. But on December 1, 1955, in Montgomery Alabama, Rosa Parks, a black woman, refused to give up her seat, setting off the Montgomery bus boycott. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional; the boycott ended December 20, 1956, a day after the Court’s written order arrived in Montgomery. Parks, who had lost her job and experienced harassment all year, became known as “the mother of the civil rights movement.” It was a day that change history. In the spring of the year AD 30, fifty days after the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, He had told His disciples to tarry in Jerusalem until they be endued with power from on high. Luke states: “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4) This was a day that changed the history of the church. And now, everyone that is filled with His Spirit, the same way as the disciples were, is not only making history, but they are also changing history. Will your name be written in the History book of life?

Sing: I’ve got the Holy Ghost down in my soul, just like the Bible said. I’ve got the Holy Ghost down in my soul, just like the Bible said.  Well I’ve been to the water and I’ve been baptized in Jesus Name, my soul got happy and I’m satisfied, I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now, just like the Bible, just like the Bible, just like the Bible said.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 5 June 2023

What’s Hindering Your Rest?

“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” (Jeremiah 6:16)

Today’s Morsel: Sometimes in conversation, I hear folks saying that they don’t rest well at night and that they have trouble sleeping. Why can’t people rest? What is hindering them from getting the rest that they need? Some professionals attribute it to too much caffeine. Others, to too much stress, fear, and uncertainty of life. While others say poor dieting and the environment where they live. Are these really the hindrances to rest? The Lord told Jeremiah: Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. God says that the hindrance to rest is that people won’t ask for the old path, the good way, and walk therein. I find that it is a shame when God gives us the answers to our problems, tells us how to fix it, and then folks refuse to listen and do it. And some of those same folks will say that God doesn’t hear and answer their prayers. You know, I have concluded that we may not be seeing our prayers answered, not because God isn’t listening or is delaying in answering, it may be because we aren’t reading His Word and accepting the answers that He’s already given us for fixing the problem. “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” (Psalms 127:2). Listen carefully, He may have already given you the answers you are seeking for.

Sing: I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river in my soul. I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace live a river, I’ve got peace like a river in my soul.

The Trust Factor

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Today’s Morsel: Most soldiers will tell you that the easiest way to trust God is to jump from an airplane while in flight with only a parachute on your back. Even an atheist may not tell you that, but believe me, when they jump, they say something, even if it is simply, ‘Oh God’.  Why do most folks feel that there is no need to trust God when things are going well for them, yet then when things are chaotic, they turn to God? If you will learn to trust God in the good times, you won’t have trouble with trusting Him in the bad times. You don’t prepare for the present; you prepare for the future. We don’t lay up treasures here on earth, we lay them up for where we are going. Heaven!  Job didn’t sacrifice for his children for the present, he prepared for their future. Scripture said: “And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.” (Job 1:5) Job didn’t have a problem with trusting God. He knew that God knew exactly where he was always, and that God would come through for Him. Even Abraham, when told by God to offer Isaac for a sacrifice, said to his servants: “….. abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you” (Genesis 22:5). And the writer of Hebrews tells us: “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.” (Hebrews 11:17-19). Remember, if we have been baptized in Jesus’ name, we are the seed of Abraham and we ought to have the same trust when God asks us to do something that seems impossible.  He is always with us.

Sing: For the God on the mountain, is still God in the valley, when things go wrong, He’ll make them right. And the God of the good times, is still God in the bad times, and the God of the day, is still God in the night.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 2 June 2023

Do You Love the Word?

“O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” (Psalms 119:97)

Today’s Morsel: They say that a well-worn Bible is the sign of a well-fed soul. We should be hungry every day for spiritual things. Scripture says: “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11) You must know what the word says for yourself. You must educate your mind and gain understanding. Paul states: “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) Here Paul is referring to Isaiah 64:4, which reads: “For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.” (Isaiah 64:4) Paul was a man who studied and applied himself to God’s word. He told Timothy: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15) And, “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine... “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” (1 Timothy 4:13, 15-16). The more time you spend in God’s Word, the more you are going to love it, love Him, and the more you are going to know, and the more it is going to benefit you and others. You can’t share with others what you do not know. Through His word, God will reveal to us more about Him, and who we truly are. When we love the word, we are really loving God, because He is the Word made flesh.

Sing: I love to tell the story! “Twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 1 June 2023

Faithfulness

“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:1-8)

Today’s Morsel: What will God find you doing when He returns? Will He find that you have been faithful in the things that He’s asked you to do? Will He find that you have increased in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of Him and who He is? Will He find that you have obeyed His Word and have shared it with others? Will your faith be a ten, or still a one?  Will you have been faithful to church, daily devotions, and compassion? Will He find that you have taken up your cross daily and followed Him? Faithfulness is the concept of unfailingly remaining loyal to someone or something and putting that loyalty into consistent practice regardless of extenuating circumstances. Always remember, the root word for faithfulness is faith, and without it, shall no man see God.

Sing: He’s been faithful, faithful to me; looking back, His love and mercy I see. In my heart, I have questioned, and even fail to believe, yet He’s been faithful, faithful to me.
