You Can’t Live By Bread Only
“All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers. And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.” (Deuteronomy 8:1-3)
Today’s Morsel: Spiritual growth and development start with obedience. Israel, even though they had been in captivity for over 400 years, we see that God still provided for them. And we see that even after God had brought them out of captivity, they wanted to go back because they said, “We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.” (Numbers 11:5-6) Their mindset was we had rather be in captivity eating freely then to go where we don’t have food and where we are going. I believe this is why some folks backslide and go back into the world. They think that they had it better back there then where God is leading and taking them now. They want it now, instead of learning how to wait for what God is doing in their lives and has for them in the future. Moses knew that the question of why God caused them journey in for forty-years, the wilderness, was in the camp. And so, he told them, “And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. Maybe you have questions about what God is doing in your life. Let me encourage you, just keep obeying God’s word and you will see that He makes all things beautiful in His time.
Sing: Jesus! Jesus! You know what’s best for me. Lead on, Jesus! I’ll go wherever You lead.
Thought For Today: “He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.” (Proverbs 4:4)
