What’s Following Your But?

“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.”
(Jeremiah 6:16)

Today’s Morsel: When the spies that Moses had sent to spy out the promised land returned, they first began by giving a great report of the land of promise. Seeing the large graphs, maybe some huge watermelons, or a basket of figs, pots of lentils, hearing that the land was flowing with milk and honey, probably had everyone in the camp rejoicing and yelling lets go up right now.  Then they said: But  But! What do you mean But! What’s wrong? What’s the problem? What aren’t you telling us? Did something happen? Is it not what we think it will be? Explain to us your but! And they said: “Nevertheless (But) the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” (Numbers 13:28-33) One but, destroyed the faith of so many. And scripture says: “And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.” (Numbers 14:1) The Lord said through Jeremiah that if you want peace you just need to get in the old path and walk therein. But they said that they would not. What’s following your but? That is what will determine your future.

Sing: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way; to be happy in Jesus, than to trust and obey.
