Hooah!
“Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit
thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou
therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that
warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please
him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” (2 Timothy 2:1-4)
Today’s
Morsel: Today is the U.S. Army’s Birthday. On 14
June 1775, Congress "Resolved, that six companies of expert riflemen, be
immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia… [and]
as soon as completed, shall march, and join the army near Boston, to be there
employed as light infantry, under the command of the Chief Officer in that
army." The delegates then prescribed an oath of enlistment that
required the soldiers to swear: “I have, this day, voluntarily enlisted myself
as a soldier in the American continental army for one year unless sooner
discharged: And I do bind myself to conform, in all instances, to such rules
and regulations, as are, or shall be, established for the government of the
said Army.” The next day Congress voted to appoint George Washington “to
command all the Continental forces” and began laying the foundation for
"the American army."
Paul,
writing to Timothy and to encourage him, wrote, “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of
Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this
life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” The
duty of a soldier is that of compassion, resistance, obedience, submission, and
servanthood. Therefore, their oath of commitment cannot be taken lightly
as others are depending on them for protection and freedom. The only way
that a nation can remain free is if its military does its job and does it based
on its oath of enlistment. Are you living up to your oath to support and
defend the gospel of Jesus Christ?
Sing: I may
never march in the infantry, ride in the cavalry, shoot the artillery. I
may never soar over the enemy, but I’m in the Lord’s army. Yes, Sir!
Thought
For Today: Happy Birthday, Army!
