Overcoming Temptation

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Today’s Morsel: One of the things about temptation is that everyone is enticed and lured by it. We are tempted to lie in the bed when we know that we ought to get up and pray. We are tempted to take another piece of pie or cake when that first piece tasted so good. We are tempted to lie and cheat when we are struggling financially, or when our backs are against the wall, and we are in trouble. We are tempted to go back to our old ways when we see what looks like fun being had by others that are not in the church. The Bible says that even Jesus was tempted in all point like as we, yet He did not sin. He did not give in to it. Paul said that there is no temptation that is not common to man. In other words, we are all tempted by the same things. The lust of the flesh. The lust of the eyes. And the pride of life. Every temptation falls into one of these categories because these are the weapons of Satan. Remember, he is called the tempter. “And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” (Matthew 4:3) Paul told the church at Thessalonica: “For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know. For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.” (1 Thessalonians 3:4-5) So how do we overcome temptation? Jesus gives an example by quoting and standing on the word of God. If it worked for Jesus, it will work for you. James said: “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.” (James 1:13-16) Don’t let lust trick you. Stay firm on God and His word and He will keep you from falling.

Sing: I command you Satan in the name of the Lord to take up your weapons and flee.  For God has given the authority to walk all over thee.

Thought For Today: “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.” (Revelation 3:10)
