Abounding In Grace
“Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on
the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction the
abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their
liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they
were willing of themselves; Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive
the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And
this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord,
and unto us by the will of God. Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had
begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. Therefore, as ye
abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all
diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.” (2 Corinthians 8:1-7)
Today’s
Morsel: Throughout the apostle Paul’s writing to the
church, he calls for the
church to abound in everything. The word abound means
to excel, to
increase. To have more than enough. To be
present in large numbers or in great quantity. To be prevalent. He calls for the church to abound in faith,
and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your
love to us, and in grace. You see, some Christians are lacking in these
areas, and they need to be reminded to grow. We
must increase our faith. We must increase our communications about
Jesus. We must increase our knowledge of his words and ways. We
must increase our love toward God and each other. And we must grow in His
divine influence in our lives. As we increase and abound in everything, we
must not ever forget grace. For we are saved by grace. The apostle Peter tells us, “But grow in grace, and in the
knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18) Every trait of the Christian character should lead us to a
much greater benevolence. It should cause
compassion, kindness, and generosity from us toward others. Religion, in general, is often represented as “grace,” since every part
of it is the result of grace, or of unmerited favor; and to “grow in grace” is
to increase in that which constitutes true religion. Are you
growing?
Sing: Grace! Grace! God’s
grace. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within. Grace!
Grace! God’s grace. Grace that is greater than all our sins.
Thought For Today: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it
is the gift of God”
(Ephesians 2:8)
