Do You Know the Letter?
“Then
Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and
the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among
the Ephraimites, and among
the Manassites. And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the
Ephraimites: and it was so, that
when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of
Gilead said unto him, Art thou
an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay; Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth:
and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him,
and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the
Ephraimites forty and two thousand.” (Judges
12:4-6)
Today’s Morsel: When
I lived in Asia, it was very hard for me to pronounce certain words that began
with the letters ‘ts’. For some reason, I could not get it to come out
right, no matter how hard I tried. When Jephthah went to war against the
Ephraimites to slay them, many of Ephraimites tried to escape across the Jordan
River to safety. But the guards had a challenge and a password that they
had people say before they could cross. They said unto them say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth, for he
could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took
him, and slew him. One letter, the letter ‘h’ they could not pronounce. And
they killed them. Can you pronounce the correct word to get across to the
other side to safety? If not, learn how to say ‘repentance’, because it
is the only letter that will get you to the other side.
Sing:
Just over in the glory land, I’ll join the happy angel band; just over in the
glory land. Just over in the glory land there with the mighty host I’ll
stand. Just over in the glory land.
Thought For Today:
The ACTS of the apostles is the only letter that will get you across to safety.
