What Sound Are You Giving
“For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?” (1 Corinthians 14:8)
Today’s Morsel: During olden days of military life and training, the bugle was used to give signals to soldiers throughout their day and in times of battle. Each sound had a certain purpose for which the bugler gave. Certain sounds were given for soldiers to charge their enemy, to retreat from their enemy, to assemble on their leaders, to wake up, to go to bed, and even to eat. If the wrong sound was given or the sound was not clear, it could create confusion or the loss of life. In writing to the church at Corinth, Paul used the idea of a military battle to address the use of the gift of speaking in tongues in the church, and said if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself to the battle. His analogy was that when this gift is used in the church, that there ought to be a clear sound by whomever it is being given by. There should be no confusion as to what is being said so it can be received in the ear of the receiver. As those soldiers in the church should know the sound and will then know how to prepare themselves and respond. But if the sound is not clear, confusion can set in and the church will be seen as confused. Do you know the sound from heaven? What sound is being sent out from your life? Does your life give a clear sound to others?
Sing: See the glorious banner waving! Hear the trumpet blow! In our Leader’s name we’ll triumph over every foe.
“Hold the fort, for I am coming,” Jesus’ signals still; wave the answer back to heaven, “By Thy grace we will.”
