Bitter Water
“So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.” (Exodus 15:22-26)
Today’s Morsel: One of the most important commodities for life is water. We can usually go a while without water, but not for long. When we review American history, we read about the wagon trains heading west, and that there were times when the people found themselves suffering because they found no water during their travels across the Badlands, and many perished. We read that in some cases, even when they found water, they could not drink the water because they were poisoned or diseased. But they prayed and it wasn’t long before God would give them water to drink.
When God lead the children of Israel out of Egypt, they crossed the Red Sea, and they, too, soon found themselves without water to drink. But when they found water, it could not be drunk because it was bitter. In other words, these waters had issues, and they could not be consumed. And so, they cried out to God for His help. And God gives Moses instructions for making the waters potable and able to be consumed. This event shows us for our need and dependence upon God in every situation and circumstance. One of the things we learn is that we must not lean unto our own understanding. God knows the things that we have need of. And even when we think that there is no way, God will always make a way when we trust Him and believe in Him. The waters may seem bitter and not able to be drunk, but God knows how to make them sweet for consumption.
Sing: I thirsted in a barren land of sin and shame, and nothing satisfying there I found. But to the cross of Christ one day I came, where springs of living waters did abound.
Drinking at the springs of living water, happy now am I, my soul they satisfy. Drinking at the springs of living water; O’ wonderful and bountiful supply.
