When God Doesn’t Make
Sense
“And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained
unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress,
to hide it from the Midianites. And the
angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles
which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?
but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the
Midianites. And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and
thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my
family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house. And the LORD
said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites
as one man. And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then
shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.” (Judges 6:11-17)
Today’s Morsel: Have you ever questioned God when He has told you to do something? I think there are those times that God’s ways do not make sense
to us. We see this throughout scripture. Gideon said this does
not make sense. If it did, why is all this happening to us, and where are
all the miracles that our fathers told us of. In other words, if God is
for us, then why are we suffering. Jonah became angry with God after he spent three nights in the whales’ belly, then had to preach to Nineveh, and God didn’t destroy them. Scripture says, “And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly,
and he was very angry. And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O
LORD, was not this my saying, when I
was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that
thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great
kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.” (Jonah 3:10-4:2)
To Jonah, it didn’t make sense. Why couldn't God just do what He did in
the end in the first place? He failed to realize that God uses men to
accomplish His purposes. The story is told of a lady who was told by God
to go stand on her front porch and wave the towel in her hand. It did not
make sense to her, but she did it anyway. Later while telling her story
in church, a man came up to her and questioned her about her story and told her
he had seen her on the porch waving the towel while he was on his way to commit
suicide, but when he saw her waving the towel, he felt the Lord telling him not
to, that someone did care because she was waving hello to him. So he had
not taken his life that day, but rather found his way to the church.
Sometimes it is not going to make sense to you when God tells you to do
something. but do it anyway. You never know whose life you may be touching
by your actions.
Sing: Trust and obey, for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus,
than to trust and obey.
Thought For Today: Don’t lean unto
your own understanding!
