Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways. (Proverbs 3:31)
Today's Morsel: Solomon tells us that we must not envy the prosperity of evil-doers, (Proverbs 3:31). His caution is the same as his father David gave in Psalms 37. (Read the entire chapter). Envy not the oppressor, scripture tells us. Though he be rich and great, though he live in ease and pleasure, and make all about him to stand in awe of him, yet do not think him a happy man, nor wish thyself in his condition. We must not choose any of his ways; do not imitate him, nor take the course he takes to be rich. We must never think of doing as he does. Scripture tells us not to envy sinners. We must not desire to sit in the scorner's seat or hurl the cynic band. And the reason, David said, is, "For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb" (Psalms 37:2). Paul told Timothy, "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses" (1 Timothy 6:6-12). Don't let your heart be drawn away by the ways of the oppressor, it's not good for the soul.
Sing: I have decided to follow Jesus! I have decided to follow Jesus! I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.
You can take this whole world, but give me Jesus! You can take this whole world, but give me Jesus! You can take this whole world, but give me Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.
