How Far Is Your Heart From God?
“Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.” (Matthew 15:1-8)
Today’s Morsel: Is your heart near or far away from God? Jesus said that the people draw close to Him with their mouth and honor Him with their lips; but their heart is far from Him. This is an indictment to every one of us. Yes, it was written to address the condition of the hearts of the scribes and Pharisees, but it speaks volumes to you and me. Paul said that the things which were written in the past, were written for our learning. Are we saying one thing and doing another? Are we singing praise on Sunday and gossiping on Monday? Where is your heart as it relates to God? Does He have it all? If our hearts are not given to God, then all our worship is just lip service.
Sing: Lord, I give you my heart, I give you my soul, I live for You alone. Every breath that I take, every moment I’m awake, Lord, have Your way in me.
