Know The Name
“In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of
Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. And
the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels
of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of
his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. And the
king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed,
and of the princes; Children in whom was
no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in
knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had
ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the
learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. And the king appointed them a daily
provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing
them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. Now
among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
Azariah: Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto
Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of
Abednego.”
(Daniel 1:1-7)
Today’s Morsel: When I am
teaching on the Oneness of God and we are discussing the name and titles of
God, I always like to ask my class what their name means. Most people
have never investigated the meaning of their name. When Daniel, Hananiah,
and Mishael, and Azariah were taken into slavery, their names were changed to
Belteshazzar, Shadrach, and Meshach, and Abednego. The name Daniel
means Judge of God. The name Hananiah means Jah (Jehovah) has favored.
The name Mishael means who (is) what
God (is). And Azariah means Jah
(Jehovah) has helped. But when the king changed their
names to Babylonia names, it gave them no meaning at all. Isaiah wrote
concerning Jesus, “Therefore the Lord himself shall
give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall
call his name Immanuel.”
(Isaiah 7:14) Matthew wrote, “Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of
the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and
shall bring forth a son, and they shall call
his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:22-23) “And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he
called his name JESUS.”
(Matthew 1:25) Jehovah is
Salvation. If you give your children names that mean nothing,
they just may grow-up and become such.
Sing:
His name is Wonderful. His name is Wonderful. His name is Wonderful,
Jesus my Lord. He is the Mighty King, Master of everything, His name is
Wonderful, Jesus my Lord.
Thought For Today: Rufus
means a Christian (See Romans 16:13) What does your name
mean?
