2014 April 4 - Morning Manna

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:1-6)

Today's Morsel:   The Bible doesn't mention much about Abel in the book of Genesis, other than these following scriptures. "And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper "(Genesis 4:2-9)?
Abel seems to have been a shepherd. He kept sheep.  He knew to give God the best and the firstlings.  And we see that Cain kills his brother Abel.  For what reason we do not know. Was it jealousy?  We don't know.  Was it accidental? We don't know.  But the writer of Hebrews lets us know that, "By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh."  The writer lets us know that even though Abel is dead today, the offering that he gave to God still speaks to us today.  We must always return to God the first and the best in all things.  Anything less will not be accepted even though we may think so.

Sing:  We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.  We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.  And we offer up to You, the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and we offer unto You the sacrifices of praise.
