Why Are You Worshipping Where You Are Worshipping?

“Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.” (John 4:20-26)

Today’s Morsel: Jesus’ conversation with the woman at the well seems to transition from talking about living water and her husband to worship. We don’t read anything from John about their discussion about worship prior to the woman bringing it up. The woman tells Jesus that He said that in Jerusalem is the place that they ought to worship, but that their fathers worshipped in that mountain. You see, there were high places chosen by their fathers to worship God and even false gods. Even though in some cases it was mixed with idol worship, they often chose the high places, which, in some cases, would be the mountains. As we read in scripture that some kings, even though they did the right things before God, they did not remove the high places of worship. They still allowed the people to worship wherever they wished to.  Jesus saith unto her, ‘Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.’ Jesus tells us that she doesn’t know what she is worshipping. By following how their fathers worshipped, they were more than likely worshipping idols. Like so many, they have no clue what they are worshipping. Some of them were worshipping a multiplicity of gods. While others, worshipped they know not what. The first commandment was, “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” (Exodus 20:2-6) If one is not worshipping Jesus, they don’t know who they are worshipping, because neither is their salvation in any other.

Sing: I worship You, Almighty God, there is none like You. I worship You, O’ Prince of Peace, that is what I long to do. I give you praise, for You are my righteousness. I worship You, Almighty God, there is none like You.

Thought For TodayBut the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
