A Better Country

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:13-16)

Today’s Morsel: As I listen to the news speaking of the immigration problem on the southern border, I’m reminded of the writer of Hebrews when he said that the patriarchs considered themselves as stranger and pilgrims on the earth seeking for a better country. What about you? Are you putting your roots down here, or are you seeking for a better country, a heavenly one, where God is not ashamed to be called your God? Paul tells us: “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:1-3) If we don’t seek it, we sure aren’t going to find it. I think that if you would be honest with yourself, you became a Christian so that you could go to heaven and be with Jesus forever. Am I correct? If your answer is yes, then you must keep looking for that city whose builder and maker is God.

Sing: There’s a country far beyond the starry skies, there’s a city where there never comes a night; if we are faithful, we shall go there by and by; Tis the city where the Lamb is the Light. In the city where the Lamb is the Light, in the city where there cometh no more night. I’ve a mansion over there and when free from toil and care, I am going where the Lamb is the Light.
