The Importance of Doctrine
“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and
offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” (Romans 16:17)
Today’s Morsel: The word Doctrine comes
from the Greek word ‘didaskalia’ which means instruction or teaching. It
does not mean opinion as some seem to believe. Doctrine is extremely
important in our Christian walk with God. The apostle Paul told Timothy that he
should preach the word. Because he said, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but
after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching
ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be
turned unto fables.”
(2 Timothy 4:3-4) We should be careful that we do
not follow a preacher just because he can preach good, sound good, and can tell
us what we want to hear. Instead, we should be looking for those who
teach and preach sound apostle doctrine. Paul said to mark them that
cause offense to the doctrine and to avoid them. If you want to be saved,
then you must continue in the original apostolic doctrine once delivered to the
saints (see Acts 2:38-47). Paul told Timothy, “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers,
in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I
come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the
gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of
the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to
them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto
the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself,
and them that hear thee.”
(1 Timothy 4:12-16) Do you know the
doctrine? If you want to be saved and not be deceived, you must know the
apostles' doctrine.
Sing: Deeper, deeper, blessed Holy Spirit,
take me deeper still; till my life is wholly lost in Jesus and His perfect
will.
O deeper yet I pray, and higher every day; And wiser,
blessed Lord, in Thy precious holy Word.
Thought For Today: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even
unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
