And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child (Luke 2:8-17).
Today’s Morsel: The annunciation of Jesus Christ into the world was demonstrated by a heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” This was not just another child that was being born; this child was special. This was God manifested in flesh. This was the Savior of the world. This was the one whom Moses and the prophets had written about. This was the one spoken of by the prophet Micah who would come, “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2). Bethlehem means the city of bread; it was the city of Naomi, Ruth, Boaz, and David—and now the city of the Lord Jesus Christ. Do you see what I see? Do you hear what I hear? Do you know what I know? Listen! We have a Savior. We have a King and we have a Lord. His name is Jesus Christ. “For neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given unto men whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Revelation 19:16). Do you know what I know?
Sing: It came upon the midnight clear, the glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth good will to men, from heaven's all gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.
