Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 6 March 2020

Hold Your Tongue

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile(1 Peter 3:10)

Today’s Morsel:  Trying to teach people how to become true Christians and pattern their lives after Christ can sometimes be a task.  Especially when it comes to controlling the tongue.  For some reason, some folks cannot stay quiet.  Maybe you have heard the story of the man who was going to have his head decapitated by a guillotine during medieval times. They would put a person in stocks and a yoke, and pull a rope, allow this sharp blade to drop removing the individual's head.  Well, as the story goes, one gentleman who was subject for such punishment was placed in the position for such punishment, in the stocks and his head in the yoke, and the rope was then pulled to release the blade.  But to everyone’s surprise, nothing happened.  The gentleman that was to be decapitated, looks up and says, "The blade is stuck" (humor).   The apostle Peter states that he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.  If we do not learn when to speak and when to keep silent, we may cause ourselves and other’s hardships and trouble.  As Solomon admonishes us, Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof(Proverbs 18:21); and that there is a time to keep silent and a time to speak(Ecclesiastes 3:7).  Don’t lose your head because you can’t keep quiet.

Sing:  Say the name, of Jesus.  Say the name, so precious; no other name I know.  That can clam our fear and dry our tears and wipe away the pain; When you don’t know what else to say and you can’t seem to find the way, just say the Name!

Thought For Today: “What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.” (Psalms 34:12-13)
