Self-Control
“He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.” (Proverbs 14:29)
Today’s Morsel: I have mentioned to folks time and time again, that the Holy Ghost brought not only into their life love, joy, and peace, but also temperance, which is self-control. Self-control means to control oneself. It’s having the ability to say no when you know that something is wrong. It’s possessing the intestinal fortitude to stand when others flee. It’s knowing when to speak and when to remain quiet. So, shouldn’t every born-again believer be filled with this trait of character? Then tell me why is it not in operation in folks’ lives? Why do people who say that they are Christians keep flying off the handle? Why do folks get upset when people cut them off while driving? Why do folks not want to wait in line to be served? Shouldn’t we be able to control our appetites and passions? Why do some feel that they always need to be the first in the food line at cookouts and church potluck? Solomon states, “When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.” (Proverbs 23:1-2) Paul told Timothy that he was to teach women that they were to be modest, with shamefacedness with sobriety. These words mean that she must have honor and respect for herself, as well as self-control and soundness of mind. You should not as a Christian become the reason for your own self-destruction. Learn to be temperate in all that you do.
Sing: They that wait upon the Lord, shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint, teach me Lord, teach me Lord, to wait.
