A Good Defense
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 5:8-11)
Today’s Morsel: If you are a follower of sports, then you know that no team ever wins without a good defense. Some folks like to think that offenses win games, but it’s really the defense. Your offense can score one hundred points, but if your defense gives up one-hundred and one, guess who is going to win. You can go out and win hundreds of souls to the Lord, but if you don’t retain your own defense and alertness, you’re going to lose your own soul. Paul’s comments, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1 Corinthians 9:27), he is basically saying the same thing. You must keep your own self in check. Even Jesus asked, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36) If you want to win the game of life, then you must, “… be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. And Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” Ephesians 6:10-18 (Emphasis mine) Stay on the alert for anything that may seem too good to be true. Watch out for those tricks played by the enemy.
Sing: Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun, let us talk of all His wondrous love and care; then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done, and the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
When the roll is called up yonder, when the roll is called up yonder, when the roll is called up yonder, when the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
Thought For Today: In the back of the book, it tells us that we win. But that will only be for those who protected themselves with a good defense in their life.
