Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 2026 October 8

Petty Excuses

“And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them? And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief. For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.” (Exodus 32:21-24)

Today’s Morsel: I’m sure some of you, like me, have wondered why God didn’t smite Aaron for lying. He tells Moses that he threw the earrings into the fire and, poof, out of it came this golden calf. What a lie. Scripture says: “And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 32:2-4) He made the calf himself. That’s what excuses are: a lie.  If you have a valid reason for why you can’t be somewhere or do certain things, it’s not an excuse; it’s a valid reason. When Samuel asked King Saul why he didn’t do what God told him to do and destroy all the Amalekites: “And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” (1 Samuel 15:20-23) His excuse was that it was the people. No, said Samuel, that’s not going to fly with God.  You didn’t do what He told you to do, not what someone else didn’t do. Your excuse isn’t going to save your Kingship (my wording). When it comes to eternal salvation and eternal life, excuses for failing to obey God’s word will not be accepted by Him from any of us. If we are to reign in heaven with Him forever, we must get rid of our petty excuses and do what He tells us to do in His word. We will each answer for ourselves; there will be no excuses accepted.

Sing: He made me free, yes, He made me free, He broke the bars of prison for me, I’m glory bound, my Jesus to see, glory to God, He made me free.

Thought For Today: Don’t allow any excuse to keep you out of heaven.
