Commitment
“Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them. If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.” (Exodus 21:1-6)
Today’s Morsel: Commitment carries a big price tag. Commitment is needed to accomplish and fulfill the promises that we make in life. Marriage vows state one’s commitment to the marriage. When a person is hired for a job, they are committing to give the employer an earnest day’s work, or they are agreeing to do the job that they promised to do to completion. Both Ruth and Paul displayed commitment when they were faced with insurmountable odds against them. Ruth told Naomi her mother- in-law, “And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.” (Ruth 1:16-17) She was not about to go back. And Paul told the Elders, before his departure from them; “And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.” (Acts 20:18-27) He did not allow fear to alter his course. The Lord told Moses that if a man was purchased as a servant, he shall serve his master for six years. But on the seventh year, he could go out free for nothing. If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master has given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him forever. The hole which would be placed in his ear, would symbolize his commitment to be a servant and to serve his master forever because he loved him and wanted to remain with him. Today, Jesus doesn’t put a hole in our ear if we say that we love Him and desire to remain with Him and to serve him forever. He brings us unto Himself, as He is the door (John 10:9), and He seals us with His Spirit, according to 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, that we are His forever.
Sing: I’m Yours, Lord, everything I am, everything I’m not, everything I’ve got. I’m Yours, Lord, try me now and see; see if I can be completely Yours.
Thought For Today: There is no commitment without “me”.
