The Key to Overcoming the Flesh

“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)

Today’s Morsel: One of the greatest enemies that you must defeat is yourself. Or should I say, your flesh. One of the reasons it is hard for most people to overcome their flesh is because that is where we all live. We are all humans living in this flesh.  God knew that we all would sometimes struggle with our flesh. You see, from the time that we are born our flesh is made strong so that we can grow and become strong to survive. We give it everything it needs to become successful. Well, after we along with our parents have made it strong so that we could grow and become productive men and women, we now must stop it from controlling and destroying us. Jesus told Peter, James, and John to watch and pray because the flesh was weak. Jesus wasn’t telling them that the flesh was weak in the natural sense; but I believe that the admonishment here was that God wanted them to understand that prayer would give them power and stamina to keep their flesh under control. I also, believe, that Jesus has given us the tools we need to help us combat and defeat our flesh. With the fruit of the spirit came the trait of temperance. This fruit is not separate where one is higher than the other, they are all a manifestation of that one and self-same spirit.  So, the character of temperance, which is self-control, must be used to control yourself. This is why Solomon states, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” (Proverbs 25:28)With the Holy Ghost in you, if you can’t control you, then Houston we’ve got a problem. Nothing is greater than God. When it seems that your flesh is trying to take over, you just need to rein yourself in and say no.  And so, to help us do that Jesus gave us His Spirit and He tells us to allow It to lead us and to guide us into obedience, and we will be strong enough spiritually and we will overcome our flesh. As Paul admonishes us: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

Sing: Would you be free from your passion and pride? There’s power in the blood, power in the blood.  Sin stains are lost in its life-giving flow, there’s wonderful power in the blood.

There is power, power, wonder working power, in the blood of the Lamb. There is power, power, wonder working power in the precious blood of the Lamb.

Thought For Today: “Walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
