Morning Manna by Rufus Parker - 2017 December 12

“And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:1-7).

Today’s Morsel:  One of the things that God told Samuel to tell the people when they wanted a king like every other nation was that they would be taxed (1 Samuel 8).  Yet they still wanted a king like every other nation.  And late in life, their children complained about being taxed.  But we see that God used this process of taxing to bring about His plan and purpose; Jesus was born in Bethlehem because of the taxing process.  Yes, He could have been born anyplace God desired; but God likes to use man-made ways to accomplish His purpose.

Sing: Tell me the story of Jesus, write on my heart every word.  Tell me the story most precious, sweetest that ever was heard.  Tell how the angels in chorus, sang as they welcomed His birth, "Glory to God in the highest! Peace and good tidings to earth."

Thought For Today:  God’s ways aren’t our ways!
